Vision Georgetown Update 1.0

The Town of Halton Hills held it’s 5th Vision Georgetown Public Open House on April 17th. Simply put, a few changes since the last meeting held in September 2017:

  • Addition of a combined Catholic elementary school/secondary school
  • Relocated one elementary school
  • Included locations of storm-water management ponds and heritage resources
  • Shifted the north-south road to the west slightly to accommodate storm-water management pond in the Core

There was no discussion of the recent Official Plan Amendment filed by the Southwest Georgetown Landowners Group (SWGLG, aka the developers and builders). The amendment application basically asks that the SWGLG’s own land use concept (which differs from the Town’s) be considered for the Vision Georgetown lands.

I asked Manager of Planning Policy, Steve Burke, what impact if any, the SWGLG’s application will have on the process. Mr. Burke said that the Town will continue with their scheduled next steps while the amendment is addressed separately; first at the Town level and secondly, if necessary, through an appeal to the Local Planning Appeal Tribunal (recently replacing the Ontario Municipal Board). What does this mean? The process may or may not be delayed by the Official Plan Amendment filed by the SWGLG.

Next steps:

  • May 7, 2018: Statutory Public Meeting at Council
  • May 18, 2018: All comments on Draft Secondary Plan received
  • June 26, 2018: Report responding to all comments and recommending Council Adoption of the Draft Secondary Plan
  • July 9, 2018: Recommendation Report ratified at Council
  • Secondary Plan to the Region of Halton for Approval

Per the Vision Georgetown website, the Town anticipates that the first people will be moving into the new community around 2021 or 2022. There are a number of developers that own land in the study area, some of which include Mattamy, Remington, Country Homes, Lormel, Ozner and Conservatory Group.
